Ingredients

For the Bread Base:

  • 4 slices of day-old bread any type, crusts optional

Optional for Flavoring:

  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon dried herbs like parsley or oregano

For Toasting:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter optional

Instructions

Prepare the Bread

  • Take 4 slices of day-old bread. You can use any type of bread, with or without the crust.
  • Tear the bread into small pieces or cut it into cubes for even drying.

Dry the Bread

  • Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C).
  • Spread the bread pieces evenly on a baking sheet. Ensure they’re in a single layer for even drying.
  • Bake for 10-15 minutes, checking occasionally, until the bread is completely dry and crisp.

Cool and Blend

  • Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes.
  • Transfer the dried bread to a food processor.
  • Pulse the bread in short bursts until you achieve the desired crumb size (fine or coarse).
  • Add Seasoning (Optional)

For flavored breadcrumbs, mix in:

  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon dried herbs like parsley or oregano.
  • Combine evenly to enhance the taste of your breadcrumbs.

Store the Crumbs

  • Place the breadcrumbs in an airtight container.
  • Store at room temperature for up to 2 weeks or freeze for extended storage.

Notes

Use Day-Old Bread: For the best breadcrumbs, always use day-old or stale bread. Fresh bread can result in clumpy crumbs.
Store Properly: Place breadcrumbs in an airtight container and store them at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. For longer storage, freeze them in a resealable freezer bag for up to 3 months.
Reheat and Revive: If breadcrumbs lose crispiness, spread them on a baking sheet and toast them in a 300°F oven for 5 minutes before use.
